Abbie's Fitness Journey
Growing up, I tried out a ton of sports but landed on soccer, cross country, and horseback riding. When I was 15, a combination of under-eating and overtraining led to a tibial stress fracture and a gastrocnemius tear. The pain I was experiencing progressively got worse until it not only stopped me from my sports, but also prevented me from doing my everyday tasks. Any type of movement, light touch, and even loud sounds caused an intense burning pain, discoloration, and swelling in my leg. After several years, I was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. With the help of my amazing medical team, I have figured out how to mitigate my symptoms, allowing me to do things I couldn’t image before.
Since my diagnosis, I have spent a lot of time understanding how the body works from multiple facets, unlearning old habits, and celebrating both big and small accomplishments. I also began coaching a youth running team and got certified as a personal trainer to help others develop a positive relationship with fitness.
My favorite types of movement right now are hiking, running, and resistance training!
What Body Positive Means to Abbie
Body positivity, to me, encompasses the appreciation and recognition of all the amazing things your body does for you. It’s embracing yourself with acceptance and love, and recognizing that every body is worthy of love, care, and respect.
